Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes

Santa Maddalena Val di Funes

In this picturesque village, the Church of Santa Maddalena, the protagonist of enchanting postcards of Val di Funes, is definitely worth a visit. The first official mention of the church dates back to 1394, and it is likely that it was built at that time. However, of the original building, only the bell tower remains today. The present church dates back to the end of the 15th century, while its Baroque interior was added in the 18th century.

According to one legend, the church was erected on the spot where it stands because the waters of the Rio Fopal brought an image of St Magdalena to the spot. Another legend has it that, during a violent storm, a small statue of St Magdalena miraculously appeared on the very spot where the church stands today. Even today, it is still possible to admire this statuette inside.

Near the church are the sacristan’s house, the old school and the Obermesnerhof farm. This complex is set in wonderful surroundings that exude an ancient atmosphere, almost as if time had stood still and everything had remained intact under a glass bell for all this time.
