What are earth pyramids?

Have you ever seen earth pyramids? They are a natural phenomenon that occurs in particular terrains, often after landslides or soil disruption. Their formation is the result of alternating torrential rains and droughts that gradually erode the soil, creating these particular earth formations.

Pyramids develop best in areas sheltered from the wind, where the soil is particularly friable. Their longevity depends on the ability of the boulder covering them to protect them.

Among the most famous earth pyramids in South Tyrol that you can visit are the Renon pyramids above Bolzano and the Plata pyramids near Percha in the Pustertal valley.
