If you’re exploring Alta Pusteria and planning an unforgettable hike, Rifugio Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte) is a must-visit. Located at 2,405 meters in the heart of the Tre Cime Nature Park, it is one of the most iconic huts in the Dolomites, thanks to its exceptional panoramic position: from here, you can enjoy the most famous (and photographed) view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Rifugio Locatelli is open from late June to late September, when the trails are snow-free. In summer, it can be very busy, so it’s advisable to start early or plan your hike on weekdays.
The easiest way is to start from Rifugio Auronzo, accessible by car or paid shuttle from Misurina. From the Auronzo parking area, trail no. 101 will take you to Locatelli in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The route is panoramic, well-marked, and suitable for hikers with a basic level of fitness.
Along the way, you’ll pass Rifugio Lavaredo, Forcella Lavaredo, and enjoy spectacular views not only of the Tre Cime but also of the Cadini di Misurina, Croda dei Toni, and Monte Paterno.
Once you arrive, you can take a well-deserved break: Rifugio Locatelli serves hot dishes, beverages, desserts, and has a terrace you won’t want to leave. The menu features typical South Tyrolean cuisine: soups, dumplings, stew with polenta, apple strudel—simple, hearty and satisfying, especially after the hike.
If you decide to stay overnight, the hut has dormitories and a few smaller rooms, but booking well in advance is essential, especially in high season. Staying here allows you to experience sunrise or sunset over the Tre Cime, a truly unique experience as the mountains glow in pink and orange.
Beyond the scenery, Rifugio Locatelli is also historically interesting: nearby, you can find galleries and military positions dating back to World War I, which you can visit if you have time and curiosity.
