If you’re looking for a truly special experience at Alpe di Siusi, set your alarm early (very early!) and get ready to walk in silence as the sky turns pink: sunrise at the Denti di Terrarossa is one of those moments that stays with you, even after you’ve returned.

Where are Denti di Terrarossa located

The Denti di Terrarossa (Roterdspitze) are a series of jagged spires located in the Sciliar group, on the eastern part of Alpe di Siusi. They are clearly visible from far, but experiencing them up close at sunrise is something entirely different. The light brings the rocks to life in warm shades, between orange and purple, while all around you, there is complete silence. Just your footsteps, the crisp air, and the spectacle of the Dolomites waking up.

How to organize your hike

The most convenient starting point is Compaccio, easily reachable by car or by cable car from Siusi (note that the lift opens only after 9:00 AM, so to catch the sunrise, you’ll need to hike up earlier or stay overnight in the area). From Compaccio, take trail 10 towards Rifugio Alpe di Tires: the section you’re interested in passes through the Saltner Hütte area and gently ascends to Passo Molignon, where you can see the Denti from a privileged perspective.

To catch the sunrise, we recommend leaving at least 1.5 hours before the first light, with a headlamp, warm clothing, and a good packed breakfast in your backpack. The walking time varies depending on your starting point, but expect it to be between 1.5 and 2.5 hours on average.

A hike for fit walkers, but not impossible

The elevation gain isn’t excessive (about 500-600 meters), but a minimum level of fitness and hiking gear (boots, poles, windbreaker) are necessary. In return, you’ll be treated to one of the most breathtaking views of the entire Alpe di Siusi: a 360-degree panorama of the Dolomites, without the crowds, at the most intimate moment of the day.

If you want to make things easier, you can also sleep at Rifugio Bolzano or Rifugio Alpe di Tires and start early in the morning from there. This allows you to gain elevation in advance and also enjoy the sunset the evening before.

When to go and some additional tips

The sunrise at the Denti di Terrarossa is perfect from late June to early September, when the trails are free of snow and the temperatures aren’t too cold. . Avoid days with fog or bad weather, always check the weather and bring a map or a GPS app with you, especially if you’re starting in the dark.

Don’t forget your camera or a charged smartphone: the light at sunrise here is something magical. And once the sun has risen, take a break: a thermos of hot coffee, a snack, and a moment to look around. Breathe. It’s moments like these that make waking up at dawn in the mountains so worthwhile.

A final piece of advice? If you’re on vacation with someone, share this hike with them. The Denti di Terrarossa at sunrise can’t be told — they must be experienced, together.
