If you’re looking for an experience that combines nature, silence, and a touch of history, the San Candido Thermal Springs (Wildbad Innichen) are a must-visit during your vacation in the Alta Pusteria. Here, time seems to stand still, and you can savor a unique atmosphere among ancient trees, old walls, and healing springs.
The San Candido Thermal Springs are located just a few kilometers from the town center, nestled in the woods at the foot of the Sesto Dolomites. Once a renowned spa resort of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was frequented by princes, noblewomen, and artists seeking relaxation and healing. Today, the former grandeur remains in the now-abandoned structures and the echoes of past stories, but the charm of the place is untouched.
As you walk around the building, you’ll notice how nature has reclaimed the space. But it’s precisely this contrast between ruins and forest that makes it all the more enchanting. It feels like discovering a secret place, far from the busiest tourist crowds.
You can reach the Thermal Springs on foot or by bike from San Candido, following the bike path towards Dobbiaco until you reach a well-signposted turnoff. Alternatively, you can park at Baumgartnerhof and continue on foot along a comfortable forest trail. In total, it’s about a 45-minute walk immersed in nature, with no particular difficulties.
Along the path, you’ll find informative panels about the history of the area and the mineral waters (sulfurous, ferruginous, and magnesium-rich) that still flow in the region. There’s also a small chapel and a few benches where you can stop and breathe in the fresh, pure air of the forest.
This is a perfect outing for families with children, those looking for a relaxing walk with no significant elevation gain, or anyone with just a few hours to spare. If you feel like continuing, you can connect to other trails in the area, head up towards Malga San Silvestro, or explore less-trodden corners of the surroundings.
Don’t forget to bring water, a snack, and maybe a blanket to sit on the grass: the meadow in front of the Thermal Springs is perfect for a break in the shade, perhaps reading a book or simply listening to the sounds of nature.
