If you’re on vacation in South Tyrol and looking for an easy yet spectacular trip,Carezza Lake (Karersee) is a must-visit destination on your itinerary. Located at just over 1,500 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Val d’Ega and framed by the majestic Dolomites of Latemar, it’s one of those places that leaves you speachless… even if you’ve been there before.
It’s called the “Rainbow Lake” and as soon as you see it, you’ll understand why. Its crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks in shades that change constantly: emerald green, turquoise, deep blue. The color depends on the light, the sky, the season… and every time it’s different.
But it’s not just a “photogenic” lake: here, history and legend intertwine. The most famous one tells of a water nymph and a love-struck sorcerer who, to win her heart, created a rainbow and cast it into the lake. Perhaps it’s those very colors, trapped in the water, that make Carezza so magical.
The lake is easily accessible by car, bike, or public transport. It’s about a 25-minute drive from Bolzano and just a few kilometers from Nova Levante, along the Dolomite Road (SS241). There’s a large paid parking lot right next to the lake, and from there, in just two minutes, you’re already on the panoramic trail that surrounds it.
If you want to experience it in a slower way, you can leave your car in Nova Levante and walk or bike up along the old forest road. The route is easy and surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the forest.
The best thing to do? Walk around the lake on a well-maintained circular path that’s also accessible with strollers. The full loop takes about 20-30 minutes, but you’ll stop often: to take photos, to admire the reflections, or to sit on a bench and listen to the silence of the forest.
You can also stop at the visitor center to learn more about the area’s geology, the Latemar, environmental changes, and local legends.
In summer, there are also longer trails around the lake, suitable for hikers, such as the Latemar Trail or routes leading towards the Costalunga Pass.
We recommend going early in the morning or around sunset: the light is more beautiful, and it’s much quieter. During the midday hours, however, it can get quite crowded.
The trail is easy and suitable for young children, making it perfect for a family walk. Bring a light jacket (even in summer, there can be a bit of a cool breeze), some water, and of course, your camera or smartphone for a few special shots.
Just remember that swimming is not allowed, nor is it permitted to go down to the lake’s shores: it’s a protected area, and it should be respected with care.
